Final Reflection

I do not know why my computer chose to be stupid the one night I need it the most but I stuck with and @ 3 in the morning I am finally getting finished. Thanks Dr. Strange and the Lab assistants for being such a big help this semester. This class has helped me tremendous, and has opened my eyes to what a classroom is more like. I can't wait to take the things that I have learned for EDM310 and put them into my future classroom!

Blog Post 5 #2

Having a PLN as a teacher and right now as a student is very important. I think with this class we have opened up or PLN by doing all the comments with the kids, teachers, and our fellow classmates. We can learn what to do and what not to do from anybody. We can use Facebook and blogs to find ideas for your classroom and students. The are people all over the world with experiences and ideas that have worked for them and they are trying to get their opinions out there so other teachers that need help can see. It is always good to have a large PLN because you may never know when you need help. It is also good to have a good variety of ideas and people that you can choose from. Help is always out there all you have to do is just ask.

Finding people for my PLN has had a slow start. I have not really expanded with twitter but I think I have with my fellow classmates. I am able to communicate with them an ask them advice and how they think they will do things. This class have opened my eyes to the world of blogging and in the future that will be greatly appreciated because there are people out there that have gone through what I will be going through. Even though I did not know what a PLN was until I toke this class I have had one since I was born. I have several family members that are teachers and they are always there if I have any questions.

For the Love of Learning: What if a child is Manipulative?
Joe Bower

Children should not be manipulated into doing things in the class to get stuff done, but the kids should not manipulate the teacher to get what they want.

I think there is nothing wrong with rewarding the kids for doing something right in the classroom. It may make them want to do good everyday so they can get a prize.

Dare to Care
Finding my way in Kindergarten Genius Hour

She lets her kids have a genius hour and make things. She lets them become "makers". Their little brains are like sponges, they are smarter than you think they are. In genius hour they are making and learning. As the teacher one day she became a learner to one of her students because he created a chair out of used bottles. She had to listen to him because he had to tell her where to put glue or tap.

I think having such designated time to let kids mind wonder would be a cool thing. Let them see what they can come up with on their on and most importantly keep them engaged.

Teaching our children can be a profession By: Joel Klein

  • Pick from the best
  • Seniority distraction
  • Radical Change

Pick from the best

I agree with this paragraph about teachers needing to have higher standards. That only the best should be able to be allowed to teach. He says that " for decades, we've let virtually anyone with a college education become a teacher". This is true but I think students that are in college trying to become teachers work hard to get that degree so what's the problem. Yes I agree that they should be more prepared with things that will enable them to be ready for what happens in the classroom but I disagree that just anyone can be a teacher. I think teachers can be interchangeable because there is always someone else that needs a job, but basing their performance off of seniority is not the way to judge a teacher(new or old). Yes I think that teachers that have been there longer should have first choice on some things but not when it comes to be fired for example. It should be sole based on their performance in the classroom.
Seniority Distraction

I am not sure if i agree that this a problem or not. I think yes it is because lower income schools get just a ok education because they mostly have new teachers in their schools that haven't really got the years of experience yet so they just have to go where they can get in at.   Then on the other hand I do not think it is a problem because the teachers that work in more of a middle class school have the seniority to choose the school because they have been teaching for a while. They have worked hard to get where they are now an deserve to teach at a better school with the better pay. But then I think about the kids, they deserve a good education. Just because their parents can not afford to send them to a better school is not their fault. I do agree with his solution though. I think having the teachers take a test ever so often to make sure they are capable of teaching the kids to the standards as everyone else does. This would show that they are able to teach the kids just the same as a teacher from a middle class teacher would.
Radical Change

I do not think that I agree with this one. I do not think that allowing the teachers to be the judge of another teachers fate would be there right thing to do. That should be up to the principal and the school system that they belong to. If you were to leave it up to the other teachers you could have not very good results when it came to voting, What if the only reason the teacher was voting against another teacher was because they did not like her/him. That would not be fair and would not be based on his/her performance.  I disagree with this an think that there are better ways. Yes the teachers could suggest rules that the teachers should follow but in the end they should not be the "police" for the other teachers.

Blog Post 13

Now that your at the end of the semester and you only have one blog post left, I want you tell me why EDM310 is significant for you in becoming a teacher. I know a lot of you might have wondered why this class was important at the beginning of the semester, but now you should know how this class has helped you. Tell me what you learned from this class, and how has it helped you. And last but not least find a activity that you can use in your grade of choice and explain it.

This class has helped me in several ways. It has opened up my eyes to a bigger world of technology in the classroom. I never knew what kids could be capable of if given the chance or the tools. Just as it did when we first began it surprises me that the things that kids are learning now in kindergarten or first grade is what I am just now learning to do in EDM310. EDM310 has taught me to incorporate technology into my lessons as much as possible whether it be with a smartboard, ipad, or computer. Involve technology in the learning process because that is a major source of how the kids these days learn.
When I have kids in my future classroom I need to remember to engage the students to learn. Make it fun for them and not be boring. I think a important thing that I learned from this class was how to create a lesson plan, and how important it is to use ALEX and Buck Institute. When I first started this class I didn't understand why we needed to know how to blog but going back to one of my favorite blog post with Randy Paunch . I think this class was a "headfake". While we were not only learning how to make blogs, we were really learning how find as many ways to use technology in a classroom. It wasn't about the actually blogs, it was about what we got out of the blogs like from the research and the videos that we watched. This class taught me much more than just how to blog, it taught me better ways of teaching in a 21st century classroom using Project Based Learning.
Heather Trawicks Blog has come along way since the beginning of class and I think I will take the experience from learning how to blog and continue with one, and find different networks that I can find people to learn from in the future.
I really would like to teach kindergarten one day. I want to use the example that I used in smartboard project part b. I found a couple of worksheets in math. I placed them on the smart notebook. The worksheets wanted the students to recognize certain numbers that were missing or how many cars there were. I thought this was a good way to involve the students in the activity. I would like to use methods like these in in my classroom. Below is one of the worksheets that I used in the project. I asks the "students"(my group members) to identify the bubble with the number that I asked them to find and color it in.

                                                                                                                 Digital Pen

Teachers use digital pens to record the notes they
take. They will take the notes then they will
Digital Pen upload the notes to the computer to show to their
students on a smartboard or projector. The digital
pen can be a great resourse for students because
they can put their notes on the computer and
organize them. It can be especial helpful for students with disabilties because they can record the teacher talking then can be uploaded to the computer and converted to notes. the digital pen is slightly bigger than a stylus but very easy to use. Some particular pens require a certain type of paper but it is not that expensive.WikiPedia
Another type of digital pen was made by Leap Frog.
It allows the kid to slide the pen over the word

iPads or tablets are a great way to use assistive technology because of all the apps they have available. One of my favorite apps was iCommunicate it allows students to design their own storyboards, flash cards and more. Another one is myHomework it lets students get their homework and everything for their classes together in one app. It is very easy to use and works great. The last one I want to talk about is Dragon Dictation. It is an easy voice recognition app that allows you to speak and see what you have said in text. It is 5 times faster than just typing on a keyboard.

Mathpad
I chose to do "Electronic Worksheets".
MathPad and MathPad Plus are websites that a teacher
can use to make his or her own worksheets for students
that might have ADHD or might need help refining
their motor skills. The Mathpad version is for grades
K-2 and it helps them with borrowing and adding.
The Mathpadplus version is for grades 3-5 and it
helps them with decimals, fractions, and word
problems. Both of these electronic worksheets
will read the problem to students. Students can
use headphones when using these
worksheets so that they do no distract other students.
Research by Jessica Mayo.

The SmartBoard was created by research. Inventors used projectors, the white board, computers, and computer applications to create the SmartBoard. This combination and interactiveness created the ability to “touch control computer applications.” (wikipedia). Students with physical handicaps can use the SmartBoard as an assistive tool because it operates with the touch of the finger, or a stick. Math, Science, English, and searching the web for helpful information on school assignments are at the students request with just a touch on the white interactive board.

Project 10 interview

For my Interview project, I chose my favorite teacher from high school. Her name is Jane DeGraaf:) She inspired me so much when I was in high school and I probably would not have been able to make it through without her. She is a English teacher at Satsuma High school, she use to be a elementary teacher over at Robert E. Lee Elementary until about 2010(I think). She has the best of both worlds and could tell me from both perspectives. I chose the subject technology in the classroom. Hope you enjoy!!

What Can We Learn About Teaching and Learning from These Teachers?

The key is to involve project based learning as much as possible. Engage the kids, find things that are not only fun for them as students but for you as a teacher. I loved how Brian Crosby said, Get them Fired up". Incorporate digital learning as much as possible into a classroom. Find projects that have a digital aspect in them. In all of the videos I received a general message and that was to in a project that you do have multiple subjects being presented. For example if you are doing a science project put creative writing in their and make them tell you what they did and saw, or like in the first video he made them blog about the project and their high hopes and people started responding this was digital learning that was applied in the project as well. Make them do other things that teach them not only one subject but others as well. Incorporate them where they do not even know they are doing them, to them it just seems fun. I also found that it is important to let the kids be the creator, and what I mean by that is let them be in charge of the project. Let them have the power and choice to give their on characteristics to the project. At the end of the projects make sure the child does not just knows the material to pass the test, make sure they know the information and understands it. You can also involve the whole class at the end with a group evaluation. Involve the class to elevate their peers and to see other ideas that were out there. They could also work as a group on a project. It lets the kids have certain roles with the project just like they will have when they get older and have a job. It allows them to work as a team. When using digital devices and allowing the kids to be on the internet make sure you let the know what is the right way and the wrong way. There are ways to be safe on the internet and as a teacher we need to make sure they know this. I learned a lot from watching these videos. How to let kids be independent and engaged while having fun, can't wait to apply these to my future classroom. :)

Project 14

Group 1: Our World

Kids drawing of the Solar System

We created a project that would allow a group of students to learn about a individual planet that was assigned to the group. This project is going to be conducted over a week period. We devised a plan were they get to incorporate a Google slide presentation and a visual aid of their planet as a group on Friday. They also get to watch a fun movie at the beginning of the project that is about the planets. They are going to being conducting research as a group and answering a set of five questions about their planet that was found off of ALEX.

1. 10/5/2014
Trinity , 6th Grade in Mrs. Rivera class wrote about tornados. She stated that tornados could also be called," twisters, dust devils, whirlwinds, waterspouts, and cyclones". She also said that when a tornado was based on a F-scale. This ranks the tornado according to their speed.
I replied with an experience that I had as a kid with a tornado and how scary it can be.

2.10/12/2014
Brett S., 7th Grade, Mrs. Ripp's class wrote about a book he read called waffles. Their was a character named Carlye (main character) and her mom which was in the hospital. He said that they did not have a good relationship. He also said that Carlye was a negative thinker. He did a great job of grabbing my attention.
I replied with telling him that he did a great job grabbing my attention and describing the main character.

3. 10/19/2014
Claire, 3rd Grade, Ms. Eisenberg wrote a paragraph about herself entitled, Presenting the Amazing Claireziny! All About Me. She gave me a brief description of herself. She is 8 years old, has 2 siblings, 2 pets, lives in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and loves Harry Potter and The book called Number the Stars.
I replied with telling her a little about myself because we were very similar in some things. I also told her that she did a good job descripting herself in one paragraph. I then suggested a book for her to read that I read at her age and loved. She replied by telling me that she already had.

4. 10/26/2014
Kyan, 6th Grade, Mr. Somerville class wrote about Being Fit. He stated things like exercise keeps your body strong and fit, exercise regularly, exercise makes you look and feel better, helps you sleep and relax, and that the body produces chemicals called endorphins which go to your brain.
I replied by telling him he did a great job and researched the subject very well.

What Can We learn from Mrs. Cassidy?

I would first take her advice and start with what I find interesting, whether it be movies, photo sharing, or writing. Since being in Dr. Strange's class I really enjoy the blogging would probably be the choice I would go with. I really think it is amazing what kids are capable of doing. Mrs. Cassidy said she only used her computers in the classroom maybe once a week, depending on the class. She makes the parents sign a permission slip making sure it is ok that their child is on the computer. She also takes extra precautions by not only not allowing the kids to use their last name, she don't use the correct picture for the correct kid(which I didn't think of, but is very smart). She stated that, "some teachers feel that their methods are working so my change". You should want to change because technology is here to stay, and "you are handicapping the kids if they do not use technology". Another reason I also did not think of that she said was when you write papers in class you typically only have one audience, when you blog the whole world is your audience. It is very powerful to the kids to know that other people all over the world could be and are seeing their post. Have online networks to help you with ideas.

If I was to add blogging into my classroom one day I would change it a little from Mrs. Cassidy. I think I would blog more than just once a week. Technology is becoming such a vital part of kids learning these days that I might even expand it to more than just blogs. I'm not really sure how using technology in my classroom would hurt my class other than something's not being visual/physical. I think with younger kids like kindergarten(the grade I want to teach) would want more hands on learning more than just playing with a compute all the time. Sometimes is ok but not all the time. But I think technology would benefit me and my future students way more than hinder us Like I said earlier I am so amazed at what kids are doing with technology already, that I would be curious what else they could do with it. If I was able to incorporate blogging or something into my classroom I think I would use her idea in how she keeps the identity of the kids hide as best as possible. That was a really smart idea that can protect kids from things that could be lurking out there. I also think I might find better ways in keeping the kids from bad websites that might appear, or explain it a little different than she did. But other than that she presented a good way to start using technology in a classroom, and I will definitely use some of her techniques.
Reasons why kids shoould blog: because its fun!

Seven Essentials for Project Based Learning

  • A very good project needs
           1. A Need to know (tutorial of beach)
A.Ex. Asking students about an experience they might of
                     had with contaminated waters.
Then let them share with the class to engage them into the project.
           2. A Driving Question
                 A. Captures heart of project
                 B. provocative, open-ended, complex, and linked to the core of what
you want the students to learn
            3. Student Voice and Choice
                 A. letting them choose how they want to do the project lets the
project feel meaningful to the students
                 B. The more voice and choice, the better
             4. 21st Century Skills
                 A. evaluate how the group is working together with a rubric
                      created by the group
                 B. Boost Collaboration Skills
                     - team building skills
                     - practice oral presentation skills and learn to produce videos and podcast
                     - etc.
              5. Inquiry and Innovation
                  A. As a class they came up with more driving questions to investigate and answer
                  B. Students seem more interested if they conduct a real inquiry
-Inquiry- follow trail that begins with their driving question .
Leads to search and discovery of answers
              6. Feedback and Revision
                  A. critiques from teacher and peers
                  B. feedback makes the students want to create a better project to present
              7. A Publicly Presented Project
                  A. invite parents, peers, and community members to a exhibition night
                  B. schoolwork is more meaningful when presented to a "real" audience

Project Based Learning for Teachers
  • Has students working over an extended period of time on a driving question
  • The question is deep and requires a finished product to be shared with others
  • Students learn all kind of collaboration skills
  • Students take charge of their learning in PBL

Project Based learning and Physical Education
This shows that PBL can be in presented in any subject. You can always find a way to engage students. Project based learning seems to be more of the efficient way to engage students in a activity in classrooms now days. Step outside of the box and create a project where students can have a voice and a choice and let them run with it(while under not so strict guidelines). As in this particular subject they got another part of the school involved. Make the kids feel like what they are doing has a meaning behind it and they will give efforts that we might have never seen before.

Two Students Solve the Problem of Watery Ketchup By Designing a New Cap
BRAINSTORM!! Come up with all kind of ideas (not just one) for a project. Things are not always going to work the first time but keep trying, you will succeed. This video was another example of voice and choice. The guys chose to do research on a ketchup bottle, how much more of a random idea can you get? But they answered their driving question and were very pleased with their final product.

10 Sites Supporting Digital Classroom Collaboration in Project Based Learning
Times are changing and things and people are evolving. We do not really use books for a means of research like we did 10 years ago. Having multiple ways for finding information in a great use for project based learning. Collaboration seems to be a key essence of how you need to be as a teacher and a learner in a classroom in the 21st century.

What Can We Learn about Teaching and Learning from Randy Pausch?

I am going to start off with saying that I thoroughly enjoyed watching this video. Randy is a great example of a man that honestly loves their job. I can only hope that I have the determination and the will to keep moving forward as he does.

I think one thing that I found very interesting that Randy said was "let kids have their dreams, do not crush them. Let their imagination go because childhood dreams can come true". He presented and idea called "Head fake". For example you are just playing a game on the computer but in reality you might be actually creating a idea for Alice in wonderland (in this case). You can make it where kids are having fun while learning something hard.
While in a interview for college, the dean gave him feedback that was a bit harsh. But instead of arguing back he toke it in. Randy said, "get someone to become self reflective". Take the comments and change what might be needed to change. Do not get offensive, the person whether it be others teachers or principal or maybe even parents take them into consideration not into a fight.
Throughout the whole sermon he keep the audience awake. They laughed the whole time. As a teacher you can not be a boring teacher. You need to keep the kids awake and engaged. Use  project based learning in class room, this helps keeping the kids engaged. Take them on field trips, make fun games in class, or whatever you desire. "Experience is what you get when you didn't get what you wanted". "Have hope", Randy said, you always need to keep going and never get up. Always help others, focus on others and not yourself, and most of all have fun! Make each class a unforgettable moment.
Through out Randy's whole sermon he talked about a brick wall. "Brick walls are their for a reason, they let us prove how badly we want something". They are their to show our dedication. Everything that can go wrong will go wrong, just keep going, never give up. "Never lose the childlike wonder, its to important". It is what drives us to keep going. You can not get their alone, always ask for help when you need it.

How do we all become learners?

When planning a lesson with project based learning, I need to find ways to find subjects that can create projects, activities, and ways of engaging my future students. I think it will be fairly easy to find or make activities that are project based learning approved. I will not know till I am in a classroom how difficult it may or may not be to keep the kids attention. Finding ways to keep their attention and the way they learn is going to be a challenge because I have to watch and learn how the kids learn and what interest them. I will also need to find ways to incorporate technology into my lessons to. Technology is the future of the teaching world.

1. How to make an audio QR code
Go to www.record.MP3.org to record yourself talking. A lot of teachers will record themselves reading a story and play it back for the students. This kind of makes the teacher become a tutor. When you begin recording, do not start talking till you get to 1. Click save recording that then creates you a URL. Then go to www.qrcode-monkey.com to create a QR code. Then put the code into word, duplicate it and save. Parents should get a free QR code scanner online.

2. IPad Centers
In the video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iezQjGbTpm0&feature=youtu.be the teacher has created different stations for the students to participant in. The particular station in this video is called the IPad center. She has the students setup the IPad where it will record them reading a story. They then play it back and listen to themselves reading, where they can then correct themselves in the process.

3.  Poplet as a center
The teacher created a station for the students where they used the iPads. She had a app called Poplet. The teacher would find books that where on the kids grade level that were about different careers. IN this video the kids choose a book about veterinarians. They would put the title in the center of the poplet. Then they would proceed to take pictured from the book and place them in the web. They would add a description of the picture. This station also them to read the book but also work on their typing skills.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ophIZhNs2s4

4.  Alabama Virtual Library as a Kindergarten center
The teacher allowed the kids to log on to the Alabama Virtual Library app. They click onto student resources then elementary schools. They type in the search engine the category they are looking up, in this case it is bicycle. The students research about bicycles an watch/listen to videos or just audio. They then draw a picture of the item they looked up. The following week they write a sentence with there picture.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wvgz8efzKLA&feature=youtu.be

5. Mrs. Shirley's 1st grade class: How to use and build a board in DE for project based learning
The students created a PDL about the moon. They watched a video about the moon and wrote down facts. They then proceeded to make a board, choose a background, and titled it. Add facts about the moon as well as a video or image. The students added narratives about an adventure to the moon. Then Karley(the student) shows us how to find pictures or images to add to their board. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bS7DMH7FqXE&feature=youtu.be

6.Students Sharing Board Builders Part 1
These to young boys shared with us their board about whales. They took a virtual field trip to glacier national park in Alaska. They found their pictures for their board on safari and saved them to the computer. They are from Gulf Shores Elementary. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3TyrmP3OL18&feature=youtu.be

7. Students Sharing Board Builders Part 2
These three girls are showing us their small board about The Haven. They are collecting money for the animals. Their driving questing was, "why is it important to collect loose change for haven." 8. Using IMovie and the Alabama Virtual Library in Kindergarten: July 7, 2014
Students in elementary are using IMovie just like the College students in Dr. Strange's college class. The students are eager and engaged in the movie making process. They do not want to quit. Dr. Strange's class has problems with wanting to be so engaged, they are just ready to get it over with. The teachers do not completely show the kids how to work IMovie, they will just give them the basic mechanics. AVL allows students to be engage an research things that interest them. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lRNvyhTmcck

9. We all become learners
Using devices changes the dynamics of teachers teaching students, students teaching students, and students teaching us. Everyone in a classroom are teachers and learners. The elderly lady shared an experience with us that one day in class she was unsure of how to use the camera in a certain app. A kindergarten student came up to her very serious an told her, "I know what to do, ill show you". She also talked about students learning how to use poplet by taking pictures of themselves and posting them. WE ALL BECOME LEARNERS! When going to Gulf Shores Elementary School the students are always eager to show you their work. Some teachers can and will rely on their students to teach them the new dynamites technology.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v5TAWgwv9O4

Implications and Teaching Opportunities for Camera Use in Teaching and Learning

Other facts about cell phones:
  1. One in ten children are getting mobile phones by the age of 5(Theguardian)
  2. Most kids have phones by 11
  3. 62% of parents are concerned that they are not able to fully monitor everything their child is doing and seeing on the phone(Edudemic)
Cell phones have good and bad place in the classroom. They can be beneficial because students and teachers can use them to research, projects, calculators, and even putting in important dates of when things are due. Even though we want to believe that kids and teacher are using phones in a classroom for good use, but they are not. Texting for teachers and students is a distraction. Like Dr. Strange stated on EDM310 Blog 87% of people say their smartphone does not leave their side.

This generation of people pretty much do not know how to live without their cell phones or ipads. Toddlers in the 21st century know how to operate technology now days better than some people. Just like elementary students are able running a successful blog and college students struggle with the same thing. My point is students and teachers are going to have cell phones weather we like it or not, so teachers might as well make good use of the distraction. Find activitys that can engage them to find things with technology.

Edutopia has some great ideas for incorporating iPads into a elementary classroom. Educational apps where students can practice their math skills. or practice reading. I think I would like to add things like this into my future classroom by adding into my lesson plan 20 or 30 minutes a day of fun time for the kids. They could get on the computers or iPads if the school I will work at has them. Allowing them only games that are dealing with educational purposes. Depending the grade I ending up teaching I might be able to come up with some sort of project they can do similar to the book trailer that we created in this class.  I am not sure if it will be possible, but assuming that most kids that i might end up teaching will have a cell phone. I might could have speed drills with them. I could ask them a question and whomever finds it the fastest gets a prize. The younger generation are learning many skills from technology these days that they enjoy being able to be on these devices. My little sister is 8 and in the second grade. I do not think they have yet advanced to using iPads in the classroom but she loves using her iPad at home. Its amazing what kids can do at that age with technology.

Project #3 Presentation

C4K: Septmeber

It amazes me what children can and are doing these days in school. I read 2 students blogs. One named Lorenzo and his post was about a book he had read called "La Luna". He described a sunset in so many words. He actually created a picture in my mind. He did a great job!

My most recent student that I read from was Trinity. She is a 6th grader in Mrs. Rivera class. She read a book called Tornados. I never knew that a tornado could be called so many names. Thanks to her she showed me this.

I enjoyed reading from both of the kids that I read from. They are doing such a great job on there blog, I can only hope that I will be able to do what they are doing when I finish this class. They make it seem so easy! Good luck kids!

Search Engines

Definition: Yahoo
  1. A software program that searches a database and gathers and reports information that contains or is related to specified terms.
  2. A website whose primary function is providing a search engine for gathering and reporting information available on the Internet or a portion of the Internet.

This site allows you solve math problems, and facts about all kind of things. For instance definitions of words, and tons of movies and their descriptions. When you log onto wolframalpha there is a search bar, just type what you want to know about a particular thing or math problem and it will help you with that answer. I have never heard of this website before, but it seems that it might useful in certain things when I get stuck or need a quick references of a word.
2. Facebook
Facebook is a social network that allows you to connect with people all over the word. You can interact with them anytime you want. Just type in the persons name or just a letter will do and all sorts of people with that name will pop up. Facebook will also allow you to be connected with your favorite stores, movies, or hobbies. They will show you updates on anything they decide to post.
I personally like having a Facebook. It keeps me connected with friends that I don't always get to see, or classmates when I need information.

3. Bing
This is very large search engine. This particular one can find just about anything you want it to find. It allows you to search for different websites that pertain to the subject you are looking for. Bing is a very easy and successful search engine and is used world wide. I have not really used bing that much, but it seems to work just fine for what I need it to do.

4. Ebay
If you are looking for all sorts of items to purchase online, this is the place. You can buy or sell on Ebay for typically lower prices than the store has the product. Just type what you are looking for into the search box and it will provide you with all sorts of options. I think Ebay is a great way for people to get there product out there, I use Ebay all the time and will continue to use it.

5. Wikipedia
Wikipedia is a encyclopedia online. It covers many subjects such as people, movies, and historic events. This search engine can provide you with dates that may be needed for a project or just for someone's curiosity. I like this website a lot, it has always seemed to give me quick and easy facts about things I am looking for.

6. YouTube
One very popular search engine is YouTube. Used for searching music videos/lyrics, short movie clips, news events, and just plain funny things. This site is used all the time. People tend to think it is funny to post videos of themselves doing stupid things, even though they are not the ones laughing in the end. I use YouTube on on occasion from time to time, and it typically finds me what I need. I find it a useful site for the entertainment industry.

7. Yahoo
Yahoo is another world wide search engine that can be used in the place of bing or Google, just a matter of preface. Can be used to find other sites on the subject you are looking for. It can be used also to show you updates on the news and sports events. I like yahoo better than bing, but sometimes yahoo does not provide all the information I need.

8. Yellow Pages
Yellow pages will allow you to find people with their address and/or their phone number. Yellow pages has evolved greatly over the years. It use to be this big yellow book with yellow pages(hints the name) with people and businesses near you, now they are able to move with technology and find you way more than what is just in your surrounding areas. Yellow pages is very useful when trying to find someone or some place. It has helped people for many years and will continue for many more.

What do you learn from these conversations with Anthony Capps?

The common thing with all these videos is that 3RD GRADERS ARE MORE ADVANCED THAN US! It is very obvious that they are doing things with ease that we are just now learning. With today's technology all the kids are raised with cell phones, computers and tablets. That's all they know. One thing that sort of stood out to me that Anthony said in the video Don't Teach Tech- Use it was, "do not expect perfection". Everyone learns different, some kids might get it on the first try and some may not, some might even do it better than you do. Anthony also stated in one of his videos that, " weather you like it or not technology is there", so you might as well use it. Engage your students with projects that keep them on their toes and involved. Everyone thinks that project based learning is what you do at the end of a lesson to show what you have learned but it should be a way to let the children to show what they have achieved in class(Project Based Learning Part 1). I will be new to the project based learning method but I think it is a always changing method that we need to a just to an learn. We as soon to be teachers need to find ways to use technology, sometimes, in our lessons because that is the way the kids are teaching themselves at home.

What are Personal Leaning Networks?

According to Google personal learning networks are:
(PLN's) are a cost-effective means for educators to grow professionally. Each PLN is crafted and personalized based on the professional interests and goals of an individual educator. This is a FREE means of professional development available 24/7 from anywhere

How can they help you as a teacher?

I do believe a PLN will effectively help me not only as a teacher, but now as a student. I have a difficult time keeping all my work organized and I think this will help me keep up with things so much better. Having a PLN will create a place for me to gather ideas for my future classroom, find people that have "been there and done that" where I can ask questions, or just like Michael Fawcett said in his video just become friends with your friends, friends and watch there conversations an learn from them. It may develop help with my professional development and knowledge.

How can you create your own PLN?

I would create mine by using twitter more effectively. Dr. Strange said that it helps him a lot, so I will give it another shot. I will also use my Facebook. I can create a certain group of people on my Facebook that are strictly educators or fellow classmates. I think the  Symbaloo will be a useful tool that I will use also. In the video A 7th Graders Personal Learning Environment seemed to be a easy way to have a PLN also, I think if she can do something of that nature I can to. She made it seem so easy. Pinterest  is another social network that I would use. You can create a Particular section that you can pin just teacher ideas in. I find pinterest to be really helpful when finding ideas for projects or classroom activity.

Who will be the first additions to your PLN?

My family would be the first to be added to my PLN. I have a lot of family members that are fellow teachers near our area. I can use them for help or questions whenever I want to. I will also add any teachers that I come across in my time in school, like Dr. Strange or the lab assistants. My classmates will be someone good to have in my PLN because not only are they learning to but we are learning the same things, so we can help each other. I would also like to extend my PLN world to people that I do not know yet. People that may be across the world or in a different state. Getting to know other people and how they do things might help me understand different ways of learning and teaching.

What do we need to know about asking questions to be an effective teacher?

Question= a sentence worded or expressed so as to elicit information
Google

When asking a effective questions you need to remember the three steps:

1. Prepare- You do not want your questions to not make
sense to the student, and confuse them

2. Play with Questions- Ask questions that make students keep
thinking after the question has been answered

3. Preserve good Questions- Listen to the students, and then
repeat or change the question around for the students

Irene Leonard says, "that effective questions are questions that are powerful and thought provoking. Effective questions are open-ended and not leading questions". Open-ended questions can leave room for discussion. This is a  more effective way to ask questions instead of a closed-ended question to where it can just be answered with yes or no. As teachers we need to be able to admit that we do not always no everything, we are learning from the students just as much as they are learning from us. When asking questions in general we kind of get a understanding on how the class learns. Mind/Shift: How we will learn claims that, "asking question can be a passive model that relies on students to absorb information they need to reproduce on a test". One thing that I saw for effective questions that stood out was from Guy Claxton and he said, "good learning starts with questions, not answers". This statement can not only open up more questions that could be asked, but reveals a new aspect of thinking when asking a effective question. "Questions can be used to stimulate discussion, creative, and critical thinking".Cornell University

I want your feedback
Stay Positive! That is the main thing that I learned from these videos and slideshows. Always when you are peer editing, remember that you do not need to tell them what to do. Simply just offer a suggestion right after you tell them what you thought they did well on. You don't want to circumcise them, just be kind and positive, even if they may be whatever William. You can do this by remembering the 3 steps in peer editing compliments, suggestions, and corrections.
Another thing that I learned that peer editing means, "working with someone your own age - usually someone in your class - to help improve, revise, and edit his or her writing." Give compliments like, "I really loved your topic." When giving suggestions "stay positive and specific." Then when you give corrections you should be looking for grammar, spelling, and punctuation errors. All of these suggestions make since on how to help you when peer editing. You also should editing someones paper the same way that you would want your paper edited. and once again Stay Positive!

Blog Post Assignment #2

Mr. Dancealot

The central message of this video is that people learn better with
visual or physical examples escpesically when it comes to dance. The author is proven his point with this video, because throughout the whole video the professor does not let them see his feet or let them try in class themselves. Then when it comes time for the final nobody knows what dance they are doing or how to perform it because they were not taught properly. Yes, I agree with the conclusion that the video is so clearly giving because most people need visual aid to help them learn how to do something themselves. It is sometimes physically impossible to know how to do something, if you do not
have a teacher that knows how to teach, escially dance.

Teaching in the 21st Century

Roberts is trying to tell us that teaching is a lot different
that teaching 20 years ago, when most of us were kids. When we were kids there was not anything near a cell phone, laptop, or Ipads. With the kids today, most of them have a cell phone by the 4th grade. Most have IPad by kindergarten if not younger, an as a baby they were probably occupied with their mom's cell phone. All of these things make it harder for teachers to obtain the kids attention with just writing on the board all day or activity sheets. We have to not just "entertain" them as Roberts stated, we have to find ways to "engage" students more in the classroom because
technology is how they entertain and teach themselves at home.

-What does it mean to teach in the 21st Century?
1.no longer main source, we are the filters

-How do we teach students to handle resources
1. Validate 2. Synthesize 3. Leverage 4. Communicate
5. Problem Solve

-Facts and Content or Skills??
1. Remember 2. Understand 3. Apply 4. Analyze 5. Elevate
6. Create??

-What does creation mean?
1.Blogging 2.Podcasting 3.Animating 4.Planning 5.Recoding 6.Designing
7.Programming

-How do we manage laptops, cell phones, and iPods at school
* The same you manage paper, pencils, textbooks, and notepads 1. No matter the tool it has to be... A. Relevant B. Challenging
C. Engaging

-Engaging
1. Don't entertain, ENGAGE A. Active B. Long Term C. Solving. Problems D. Creativity of participant
E. Engaging starts with YOU

-Entertainment
A. Passive B. Enjoyment C. Short Lived D. No Relevance
E. Creativity of others

-YOU
1. See what's out there 2. Start Small
3. Collaborate

He is correct on how teaching kids these days is different.
They are all raised with technology, so you have to evolve technology in your teaching. All kids want to do is play games typically on a IPad. As a teacher you need to come up with activity's or games for the kids were they can be "engaged"
with what your teaching them.

The Networked Student By: Wendy Dexler

The average student needs visual aid to help them
understand what they are doing. The teacher is here for This They show examples and give proper instructions on the assignment. Without teachers most would be lost in the world and uneducated. Teachers are not given
enough credit for what they do in a classroom.

Harness Your Students Digital Smarts

Does media need to be taught more in schools?
Media is growing in many ways, and yes media can teach students many things. It helps them create new skills for life that I was not taught as a kid. Blogs is one of the many things that is starting to become a new trend. What she is teaching in the students is her way of teaching in the 21st century and that is great. The curriculum has to change
and so do the way teachers teach.

Who's ahead in the race?

Dr. Strange's video points out a lot of things as a undergraduate. Students in the 21st century classes all have MacBooks in Baldwin County. They are in the 3rd grade and are doing things I have never even heard of and I'm 21 and a junior in college. Hands down the elementary students are ahead! They are learning things that weren't even heard of when I was their age. We were learning how to write in cursive and they are learning how to do blogs. Yes I give them a high five. Its great that they are learning such so young because I don't know what
i'm doing!

Flipping the Classroom

Yes flipping the classroom is new to me. Hopefully
I will not have to ever use this method of teaching when I become a teacher. I think as a teacher your job is to teach the students the materials they will need to know in life. This way of teaching is taken that away. Making the students teach themselves is not the way to go about things. I know for me I need to be visually shown how to do something sometimes. I am not good at teaching myself, so I can only imagine how younger students feel. I disagree with this completely. There is a line that needs to be drawn with technology and this is it. It makes teachers seem lazy./
The core word in teachers is to teach!

Blog Post 1

I have only heard a few comments about this class. One was that it is a very time consuming class, and that it involved blogs a lot. Both of these comments are turning out to be true so far. I'm not sure if I really have any fears about this class. If I did have one it would probably be that I would not be able to keep up, or that when I do post on my blog I will forget apart of the instructions. There seems to be a lot of little
things that have to be included in each blog.

In my past experiences with computer classes, I was able to mostly
do what needed to be done in class. I have noticed that I am having to put a bit more effort into keeping up with this class. My other classes were typically pretty easy and involved the basic computer programs like word, excel, and PowerPoint. Another thing I have noticed that is a little different is that the other classes required a book and this one does not. Also, I have never created a blog before so that is another thing that is different with this class, but learning
something new is not always a bad thing.

One of the only things I think I'm going to have a problem with
with this class is that I am not very good at remembering to get online and do my homework. I have never been good at that, that's why I try to avoid classes that require online homework all together. But since I have to take this class to finish my degree plan, I will have to change that. The only way that I can think of changing this habit where I can pass this class, is being more effective with remembering and doing my work. Wither it means checking my email more, or making more time
to finish my assignments.

If I had a question, it would probably be about the pictures that need
to be on every post. I was reading the instructions and am not completely sure what I am suppose to do. So it would be a little helpful if we could explain
that in class a bit more.

Hello, My name is Heather Nicole Trawick.

I am 21 years old, an I live in Satsuma Alabama.

I graduated from Satsuma High school in 2011, and

then I graduated from Bishop State Community College in 2014.

This is my second semester here at South Alabama and I'm a Junior.

I am majoring in Elementary Education an plan on finishing in 2016.

I am the oldest of 3, I have a sister and a brother, and 1 dog.

Both of my parents work at Axis Welding and Machine Shop.

I started college with a softball scholarship, then I graduated

from bishop with my 2 year basic degree. Then I transferred to

south this summer to finish my Education degree

I have always knew that I have wanted to be a teacher since I was

about 4 years old, when my aunt used to take me to work with her.

I'm not sure if it is just me or what, but I absolutely love kids.

I have had the privilege of not having to work throughout my

high school, and college experiences. Therefore I always

watched kids growing up. When I was 14 my mom had me a sister

and now she is 8, so I always have to help her with her homework.

So I have an idea of how I can help my children when I become a

teacher. "Teachers develop and foster the appropriate skills

and social abilities to enable the optimum development of

children. Other then going to school full time, and spending

time with my boyfriend of 6 years and my friends, I love

to paint and draw. I am very creative. I love playing

sports, I play volleyball 2 days a week. I am very excited

to finish my goal to become a teacher, hopefully kindergarten

or second. Those are my two choices for my future job.
